Customers who live in an area where energy demand is typically higher can earn even more bill credits for the summer season. Eligible customers can receive up to $80 in bill credits* (up from $40). There’s no action required to receive this enhanced benefit. Your existing thermostat or smart switch will be enrolled automatically.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • You can expect up to five events per year, typically occurring between June and October.
  • We’ll adjust your thermostat by up to three degrees during high-demand events.
  • Events last only two to three hours, and you can opt out at any time by adjusting your smart thermostat.
  • Events will be more specific to your location, making them more tailored to your neighborhood’s weather and energy usage patterns.

Why did my incentive change?

If you have been enrolled in the program, it’s because your home is in an area where energy demand is higher during peak periods. Because of this, your participation provides additional value to the electric grid, which is why your annual bill credit has been increased.

How do I enroll?

Eligible customers will receive an email notifying them of their enrollment and their thermostat or switch will be enrolled automatically. No action is needed.

How do I unenroll?

You can opt out at any time using this form.


*Bill credits of up to $26 will be applied monthly for the demand response season, June through October. If a customer unenrolls, their monthly bill credits will revert to $16 per month.

The EmPOWER Maryland charge funds programs that can help you reduce your energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and save you money. Since the inception of the EmPOWER Maryland program in 2008, the programs have saved $14.5 billion on installed measures at a cost of $4.1 billion. In addition to new program costs, this charge includes paying off the uncollected costs that were accrued over time by programs required by the EmPOWER statute and authorized by the Commission. In accordance with House Bill 864 the uncollected amounts will be fully paid by the end of 2032.
