Maryland Church Serves Local and Global Communities

As one of the largest congregations in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, First Baptist Church of Glenarden (FBCG) has more than 100 ministry, outreach, and educational programs that reach over 11,000 active members on three campuses. That’s a lot of churchgoers they need to keep comfortable.

The Opportunity

  • With an interest in reducing its carbon footprint and helping the environment, the Facilities Department at FBCG reached out to its HVAC service provider, Hugee Corporation, for energy-saving ideas.

The Upgrades

  • FBCG replaced four original, 120-ton rooftop units with four new high-efficiency, 130-ton rooftop units to provide optimal heating, cooling, and dehumidification in its 4,000-seat sanctuary.

The Results

FBCG improved its energy efficiency and reduced its carbon footprint with 639,300 kWh/year in energy savings. By replacing the old units, FBCG avoids costly maintenance and repairs and is looking forward to replacing more units in phases at the same facility.

Even more importantly, FBCG is now able to provide a consistently comfortable environment for members as they worship. The staff is also happy to have reliable equipment that has dramatically reduced the number of HVAC related complaints and concerns in the sanctuary.

"I would highly recommend the program to other businesses. It allows you to get projects done that you may not have considered. The application process was very easy, and the project was executed on time and within the allotted budget,” said Stanley Featherstone, Director of Facilities and Strategic Projects.
