St. Mary of the Assumption School

At the close-knit, 250-student St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic School, everyone seems to know everyone. That connection helped set in motion a plan that brought the school thousands of dollars in lighting incentives and significant energy savings.

The Opportunity

The school building, constructed in the 1960s, needed modernization. Budgets were tight, so Principal Ashley Lewis prioritized only essential or fiscally responsible improvements. Lighting upgrades weren’t considered necessary—until a parent introduced the idea of energy-saving LED bulbs and rebates.

The Upgrades

CS Koida, an energy efficiency service provider, recommended replacing all older lights with brighter, energy-efficient LEDs. The project was completed in two phases—classrooms and hallways first, then the gym and larger rooms—over spring break with minimal disruption. Applying for Pepco rebates was easier than expected.

The Benefits

Since the upgrades, St. Mary has achieved substantial energy and cost savings. Beyond financial benefits, the new LED lighting improved the learning environment by eliminating the old yellow-orange tint.
